A Quick Guide

COVID-19 (Coronavirus)

Do You Prescribe Ivermectin?

Only with a virtual consultation can it be determined what is right for you. Although decisions for prevention and treatment are on an individual basis, we follow the FLCCC protocols. First, there is an assessment of the risk and then, a determination of the need for prophylaxis. This is different from just using Ivermectin for early treatment when symptoms appear. You can read more about Ivermectin on our blog or call us for more information: 210-405-2486

What is COVID-19?

COVID-19, or Coronavirus Disease 2019, is a respiratory illness also known as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).

    • COVID-19 is spread through close contact.
    • It is spread most likely by droplets within 6-feet through coughs or sneezes, and possibly infected surfaces the droplets have landed on.
    • Severe cases can lead to pneumonia, organ failure, and in extreme cases, death.
    • The FDA has granted approval of Emergency Authorization Use of certain COVID -19 vaccines still in clinical trials. Read for some of the most recent FAQs on vaccines.

For more detailed information about COVID-19, read our blog.

What Are Symptoms of COVID-19?

Many people have respiratory symptoms that appear several days to two weeks after exposure with COVID-19. However, a growing number of silently infected individuals are carriers of the disease, although they are asymptomatic and show no signs. Some signs or symptoms may include:

  • Fever
  • Coughing
  • Muscle Pain
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Loss of smell or taste
Who is Considered High Risk for COVID-19?

Anyone can be a carrier of COVID-19, even those who show no symptoms or signs. It has been thoroughly debunked that the virus affects only the elderly. The population with a higher risk of developing a serious illness are:

    • People with health conditions such as heart disease, lung disease, diabetes, and kidney disease
    • People with weakened immune systems
    • 60 years and older
    • Pregnant women

What is a15-Minute COVID-19 Antigen Test?

Through the collection of a respiratory specimen sample from a nasal swab, an antigen test detects and analyzes the protein fragments of the virus causing COVID-19 within 15 minutes. Direct Med Clinic has an analyzer machine that tests for flu and coronavirus through antigen tests.  With an emergency use authorization or EUA, Direct Med Clinic now has another point-of-care testing device to assist the San Antonio community during the Coronavirus pandemic. What is a10-Minute COVID-19 Antibody Test?

Unlike a PCR test which is an active COVID-19 test reserved only for those who are pre-eligible, a 10-minute COVID-19 antibody test can be used on anyone, symptomatic or asymptomatic, who is suspected of having been affected by the coronavirus.

This rapid point-of-care, antibody test provides information that lets a clinician know if a person’s immune system has reacted to COVID-19 with a simple finger-prick. The test requires no special equipment or laboratory and detects both early and late marker antibodies by a sample of blood, serum, or plasma. It costs less than a PCR, produces a quicker turnaround, and reserves PCR tests for those who most need it most.

The 10-minute COVID-19 antibody point-of-care test can detect if a person has been recently infected with COVID-19, even in the absence of symptoms, providing some objective evidence to identify asymptomatic individuals that may need to self-quarantine to control the rapid spread and prevent the virus from reaching businesses, schools, and the community at large.

Although some patients appear to be more resilient against the virus, for those who are not, quarantine may prevent needless hospitalizations, Intensive Care Unit admissions, and untimely death.

What Can I Do Until I Can See a Doctor?

Due to the developing COVID-19 outbreak, the US hospital system is extremely overwhelmed, and thus, we do not recommend going into an emergency room or urgent care center.

  • Members and non-members are able to have access to our providers who will screen for symptoms through our telemedicine app.
  • Call 911 if you have extreme difficulty breathing, severe chest pain or pressure, extreme dizziness, or difficulty waking up.
