Results of a national study show medical debt continue to be the leading contribution of bankruptcy in the United States. 500,000 Americans per year declare bankruptcy due to illness or medical bills. Bringing healthcare to millions of Americans without making it accessible and affordable is not a solution to the healthcare crisis.

In October 2019, Direct Med Clinic and Shankx Web Development decided to address the overcharges in premiums, deductibles, copays, and surprise bills in San Antonio. Direct Med Clinic and Shankx Web Development announced their collaboration to bring the Free Market Medical Association (FMMA) to San Antonio. The founder of the San Antonio chapter is our very own Dr. Roger Moczygemba of Direct Med Clinic and Mr. Shankar Poncelet, founder, and CEO of Shankx Web Development.

San Antonio Free Market Medical Association meets quarterly to bring together business owners, providers, and facilities that see the value of price transparency in healthcare in the city. The first meeting was held November 13, 2019 at 6:30 PM- 8:30 PM at Foundation Surgical Hospital, Meeting Room #301, 9502 Huebner Rd, San Antonio, TX 78240.

The Free Market Medical Association (FMMA) seeks to restore the American values of free and unrestricted market between the buyer and the seller of goods and services by providing a free market network to San Antonio. San Antonio FMMA assists patients willing to pay cash who are seeking free market doctors, healthcare professionals who want to list their prices for services, employers seeking quality, affordable and accessible health care for their employees without the fear of costs, and advocates who are allies in the process. Members are comprised of an array of very accomplished, serious, passionate and smart individuals who have a history of public service in medicine, mental health, pharmacy, and other fields.

The Healthcare Situation

About 30 million Americans do not have health insurance, (nearly 10% of the population), and many are underinsured. Insurance costs are exorbitant, therefore, those who are insured may still receive medical bills that exceed their income. For Americans who do have health insurance, 67.3% use private insurance while 37.7% are covered by Medicaid or Medicare, government-funded programs. Of all types of coverage, the most common is employer-based health insurance accounting for 55% of the US population. The United States is the only nation among the 36 OECD nations (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development) that spends the most national GDP on a healthcare system while still providing poor health outcomes by comparison.

The Healthcare Solution

To address the unaffordability of insurance premiums in the individual and small-group markets, there must be healthcare exchanges that are designed to provide shopping platforms in which proxy shopping is an option. In other words, consumers should be able to compare and purchase healthcare services according to price and quality. This is the mission of the Free Market Medical Association and what it does through Shop Health. Offering consumers transparency in healthcare pricing and product information helps to promote competition and affordability.

Join our San Antonio Free Market Medical Association chapter and be a part of the revolution bringing price transparency in health care.

FMMA Badge

The FMMA was founded in 2014 by Jay Kempton and Dr. Keith Smith based on their mutual desire to fix our broken system. They founded the FMMA based on three pillars: Price is not a product, Value is mutually determined and requires transparent pricing and quality, cash is king – the Equality of price is critical. The FMMA connects true buyers and sellers of healthcare, educating and motivating them to work together based upon a mutually beneficial relationship built on the pillars.
