Frequently Asked Questions About Ivermectin

Common questions about ivermectin, including its FDA-approval status, clinical trials, and efficacy on COVID-19 virus in positive patients, can be found on this page. To learn even more, watch this useful video guide about ivermectin from Direct Primary Care health care provider Dr. Roger Moczygemba.

General Questions

Can I get ivermectin?

Following the FLCCC protocols, we would be happy to have a consult with you regarding Ivermectin but it is done through a virtual visit and on a case-by case-basis. We do not take insurance, although we do have a membership and also accept cash pay. Dr. Moczygemba tries to assess the risk to determine the need for prophylaxis compared to just using Ivermectin for early treatment when symptoms appear.

Is there any evidence that ivermectin has been used to treat or prevent Coronavirus?

Yes!

 In March 2020, the Front Line COVID-19 Critical Care Alliance, also known as FLCCC, created the MATH + Hospital Treatment Protocol for COVID-19, for hospitalized patients.

Later in the year, in October 2020, they developed the I-MASK+ Prophylaxis & Early Outpatient Treatment Protocol for COVID-19 as a complement of the previous protocol, where they added Ivermectin as a core medication in the prevention and treatment of COVID-19.

Also, the Eastern Virginia Medical School or EVMS created the EVMS Critical Care
COVID-19 Management Protocol in November 2020, which highly recommends the use of Ivermectin for pre and post-exposure prophylaxis, patients with acute symptoms, and mildly symptomatic patients.

It’s also important to remember that Ivermectin is an FDA-approved medicine, inexpensive, readily available, and has been used safely for decades.

 And, of course, there have been multiple studies regarding Ivermectin with controlled clinical trials in the prophylaxis of COVID-19 (8 studies) and controlled trials in the treatment of COVID-19 (19 studies).

What are the benefits of ivermectin?

Since its development in the year 1970, Ivermectin demonstrated to efficiently treat parasitic diseases, like onchocerciasis, across different countries, thanks to its anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties.

Recently, research, clinical trials, and studies linking the use of Ivermectin and COVID-19 began and it was identified that one of its anti-viral properties is that it strongly binds to the spike protein, keeping the virus from entering the cell, which explains its efficiency as a COVID-19 Treatment.

This explains ivermectin’s effectiveness against the SARS-CoV-2 virus in COVID-19 Patients.

Other properties are:

1) Ivermectin inhibits the replication of many viruses, including SARS-CoV-2, influenza, and others;

2) Ivermectin has potent anti-inflammatory properties with multiple mechanisms of inhibition;

3) Ivermectin diminishes viral load and protects against organ damage in animal models;

4) Ivermectin prevents transmission of COVID-19 when taken either pre or post-exposure;

5) Ivermectin hastens recovery and decreases hospitalization and mortality in patients with COVID-19.

6) Ivermectin leads to far lower case-fatality rates in regions with widespread use.

Are there any countries that have adopted Ivermectin use for COVID-19?

Ivermectin, as a medication against COVID-19, has been widely adopted in many countries including the United States, Mexico, Canada, Brazil, Bolivia, Portugal, and many others.

What are the results of ivermectin?

Many studies and clinical trials have shown that Ivermectin is effective in the prevention and treatment of COVID-19, as it inhibits the replication of SARS-CoV-2 in cell cultures.

Is Ivermectin Effective?

Effects Ivermectin Studies

It is most effective for early treatment.

Database of all ivermectin COVID-19 studies. 113 studies, 73 peers reviewed, 63 with results comparing treatment and control groups. FLCCC provides treatment recommendations.

Is ivermectin FDA approved for human use?

Yes.

Ivermectin is an FDA-approved anti-parasitic drug for humans, ideal to treat parasitic illnesses like onchocerciasis, caused by the bite of infected flies and common in places with tropical weather like Africa. Also, strongyloidiasis, caused by parasitic worms which can cause many health problems to the affected person depending on the disease severity.

Fortunately, Ivermectin played a huge role in alleviating the burden of these diseases among people, and it was so effective that won the Nobel Prize in 2015 for Physiology and Medicine.

It’s also approved to treat external parasites like head lice, and skin conditions like rosacea.

How long does it take for ivermectin to work?

Ivermectin is usually prescribed for 1 – 5 days, ideally in the early stages after contagion when showing the first COVID-19 symptoms.

During the treatment, the medication prevents the virus from entering the cell and cuts its reproduction process.

This efficiently reduces the longevity of the virus in the human body and reduces the risk of deaths by 75%.

Wasn't ivermectin only meant for animals?

Ivermectin was discovered in the late 1970s and has been available for human use in pharmacies since the 1980s and 1990s. (https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/drugsatfda_docs/nda/98/50-742s001_Stromectol.cfm).

In fact, its makers won a Nobel Prize in 2015 In Physiology and Medicine. 300 million people have been treated with ivermectin, donated by Merck in more than 30 countries.

Is ivermectin dangerous?

*It is not advised to take medications that are not prescribed by your doctor.

Studies have shown low rates of adverse events or allergic reactions, and the majority are mild and attributed to the body’s inflammatory response to the death of the parasite. This includes itching, rash, swollen lymph nodes, joint pains, fever, and headaches.

However, dosage and administration of the medication matter. This is why it is always best to make your healthcare provider your healthcare partner in determining what is the best route for you. They should take into account your medical history and other factors such as a list of drug reactions you may have.

What are the possible side effects of ivermectin?

Ivermectin is well tolerated by the human body, and studies show a lack of adverse effects, even when taking high quantities. Chronic liver disease is a result of overdosing on most medicines, including Tylenol, blood thinner medication, etc.

Toxicity is unlikely, but a reduced efficacy due to decreased levels can happen.

If it’s safe to take, why are there warnings not to take it?

The distribution of Ivermectin is largely controlled around the world right now. The term “off-label” is one of the best ways to describe Ivermectin’s status since it hasn’t been FDA-approved for COVID. Just because a drug has not been FDA-approved for a certain use doesn’t mean that we cannot treat other conditions successfully.

At the same time, we need to remember that COVID-19 is a somewhat recent virus, and the process to correctly test a certain medication can take several years. And even when there is, in some ways, limited evidence or insufficient evidence, clinical studies point out that this antiviral drug is effective against COVID-19 infection and helps to avoid a more severe illness.

An example of “off-label” drugs is certain chemotherapy medications approved for one type of cancer, that can also efficiently target other types of tumors too. Pregabalin is FDA approved for fibromyalgia but is also commonly used for anxiety off-label.

Off-label use of a drug often represents standard care.
